To/from in mailbox folders

When I look in the sent mail folder using spamcop webmail, the "To" entry for each message shows the sender (me) instead of the alias or address to which the message was sent. This makes it very difficult to find messages I am looking for. Is there some way to reconfigure this?

[Note: If I open a message it shows the correct info in the "To" field.]

That definitely sounds weird, especially for as long as the web-mail service has been around. Are you sure there isn't something going on with a screen layout perhaps .. thinking of a collapsed field or something? Not debating the issue here (I don't have an e-mail account so can't see myself) .. but it sure seems like this would have been brought up ages ago ... On the other hand, maybe other e-mail account holder will chime in and back up your query / request (along that line ... how did you get to "this" Forum? ... Your post sounds like a 'new feature request' which has a brand new Forum section all to itself .. just wondering if you saw it or you followed a link that brought you into this Forum directly.)

I never noticed this before..Indeed I thought I had looked for old sent messages before and had been able to locate messages by the "To" field, but maybe I was mistaken. I use a number of different email interfaces.

In Spamcop webmail, my Inbox, Trash, and Held Mail mailboxes have a "from" column, which indicates the sender. The Sent Mail mailbox has a column which has the header "To" at the top, but shows only the sender (From) information in that column.

This is definitely not a new feature request. It is an old feature not working right question.

I found this forum by registering and looking through possibly appropriate forums to post the message.

Since I don't use webmail as my main mail application, I had never noticed this myself, but Leonard is correct, it appears to show the alias used to send the message instead of where it was send to.

If I don't hear that others have sent this request to JT by the time I get home (no time right now), I will send one.

JT notified. Thanks to Leonard Grossman (and StevenUnderwood <g>).... for noticing the oddity and all the feedback .. much appreciated.

One slight update....Only my main identy seems to be exhibiting this behavior. All other identities seem to process the message correctly.

Don't know if this is due to when these identities were created (for some time on most of them) or because of the default identity thing.

I changed my default identity about a month ago. Before then I did sometimes use an alternate identity. However, before that date only my old default shows and since, only my new default. There are no examples that I can find of cases when I used an alternate identity.

There are no cases in whice address to which I sent email appears.

I just looked and I do NOT see this on my webmail, but I haven't changed my identities in a long time (and I don't know if I've EVER changed my default identity).

I have recently switched to a new mail client -- from Evolution to Thunderbird, and Thunderbird insisted on creating its own "sent" folder, which it won't let me delete even though I've gotten it pointing to the horde "sent-mail" folder. I'm mentioning this because if you (like I do) connect from another mail client maybe it's done something funny to the folder.

You might also try creating an archive folder and moving everything from sent-mail to the new folder. Maybe even delete sent-mail (if the system will let you) and create a new folder with the same name. I had a problem on another webmail system once that turned out to be a flukey permissions problem on the folder that was completely resolved when the folder was deleted and recreated. That was SquirrelMail and this is Horde, but it might be worth a try.

After reading this topic, I decided to investigate, so, using the webmail interface, I opened my "sent-mail" folder and the "To" column properly displays the addresses to which I sent messages.

However, in my INBOX view, the From column is not always behaving normally, but in a very limited fashion. When I send test messages using the Pegasus mail client to any of the identities that are forwarded into my spamcop.net account (or even directly to that address), the From column displays the "To" value instead of the actual "From" found in the message headers. I've compared the headers from the messages sent using Pegagus with other messages and the primary difference seems to be the order of the fields in the headers.

I'll have to go read the RFC's to see if Pegasus is breaking any rules as to the order of those fields, but I doubt it, in that Pegasus has been around for a long time. It's more likely that there's a bug in Horde/IMP that is grabbing the wrong information from the headers.

I have yet to see a problem, however complicated, which, when you looked at it in the right way, did not become still more complicated. -- Poul Anderson

Thanks for the additional data .... have a note to slide over to the Horde/IMP Forum sometime and see if this is documented somewhere already.

Well,

I just created a new mailbox "old-sent-mail" and moved all of my sent mail to that mailbox. There the header of the column is "from" and shows that the mail is from me. There is no "to" column.

I then deleted the old sent-mai box and created a new one. I sent a few notes.

They appear in the new sent-mail box. The header of the column is "to" but each message still displays my name. There is no "from" column.

I have never added or removed any identities.

My sent-mail folder lists a "to" column with the correct "to" address.

OK .. some more stuff to feed the fire ... JT has offered this;

For me it works exactly as you would expect.

I think that the placement of data in this field might depend on webmail

recognizing the From: address as being one of your From: addresses. So, the

From: address needs to correspond to an email address used in one of your

identities. If you send email using a different email program which uses a

different return address, then look at your Sent Mail using webmail, it

might not know that that address is really yours.

I will key on the use of the word "might" ....

Two part answer:

1. I am only talking about messages sent using the spamcop webmail application. When I send mail from other mail programs it doesn't show up in webmail at all unless I cc myself. Then it appropriately shows up in my inbox.

2. I tried adding the "from" name that appears to my identies. Doesn't change anthing. [Hmmm. must have been there before as an alias or where would it come from anyway.]

Nice try though.

[off-topic]As far back as I can remember, webmail has always done that. It's really confusing, but I've gotten used to it. I think it's a different issue, though.[/off-topic]

 HEY GUYS, ME TOO

I set up an account in this forum just for this exact problem. It's comforting to read a few of the users besides me who use WEBMAIL are geting the same junk in "TO".

Well it's not exactly the same. Here's why. I set up 2 identities. And while I was figuring out how, I realized it was puttting sent mail in a default location. So I later made a new location (back in October).

Now when I look in both of those locations, I see my names 2 different ways, but definately not the recipient as should be showing.

A. one shows my outgoing name

B. the other shows my real name

I'm sure the way the "TO" field displays is a function of the webmail software, and is not under the control of SpamCop.

Still, I can't imagine why "they" would want it to work that way.

As did I. Personally I use sent mail in one of thee ways. Most commonly I want to look as something I wrote really recently. No problem those are at the end. Second most common, I want to find something I sent to someone. To do that I would like to sort by TO addresses. Especially if I cannot remember if their address is JSmith, JefferySmith, Jeff.Smith, or any of a dozen other variants. (Third is when I want to search, usually on body contents)

I notice that this thread has gone dormant, but it really needs to be addressed, this happens on both mine and my wifes account.

I just checked and while almost all of my sent messages are incorrect in the production verson, the beta version is working properly in this reguard. The information is on the server correct, just not being dispalyed properly in the webmail application.

I am currently not using the beta until the reporting problem is repaired as that is my biggest use of webmail.

Is it possible for me to access the beta version to see if the behavior is as expected?

I know that it is not possible to use in production, but I would like to see if this solves the problem.

I tried to also, but since Jeff's reply on the 15th of Feb, I don't know. I was concerned of another problem that occurs in address book. He replied then that he had not looked at Vcard behavior.

how so? I would imagine it allows you to work with the server to send/recieve mails. You don't think so?

The beta is used with your live mail folder and settings and if it's functions meet your needs, it can be used. However, since it is a beta, and presumably undergoing modifications, that must be kept in mind if there is anything critical in your account.

Any status on the beta going live? It would be nice to have a solution to this problem.

Also it would be nice to get these replies in email. Remembering to check this forum is not easy.
